TOPIC 1: TYPES/STYLES OF COMMUNICATION

When looking at the types and styles of communication, it is suggested that there are three types from which include assertive, aggressive as well as passive. I believe that as a nurse it is crucial to use assertive techniques whilst communicating with others around me. According to O’Toole (2016), the concept of assertive communication enables us as individuals to portray our thoughts and feelings to others as well as having the maintenance of having respect for the individual as a patient which then alleviates the concept of collaboration with each other.

As a nurse from using communication that is considered as assertive, it would involve maintaining continuous eye contact with the patient, in regards to the body posture it should be relaxed and considered as strong however also being cautious of the perspectives of others around you (Pipas & Jaradat, 2010). Overall from assertively communicating it would be beneficial as it would ensure positive collaboration and relationships with patients.

The table below demonstrates examples of both verbal as well as non-verbal communication concepts for each style.
